Building Our Community: The Local Impact of Growing Roots

Growing Roots Growing Community

With a name like Growing Roots, it’s easy to understand why growth is such an important topic to us.

However, we’re not just talking about the plants we work with; we’re also referring to our vibrant community here in Southern California.

When we’re not helping clients bring the outdoors in, we’re always looking for new ways to connect with and care for our community, be it through non-profit donations, sustainability initiatives, or local outreach.

In other words, Growing Roots is so much more than an interiorscaping company. Get to know us a little better by understanding who we are, why we care, and how we push ourselves to have a growing impact in our community.

Rooting For You: The Growing Roots Community Impact

From the moment Growing Roots began over 20 years ago, we’ve aspired to make a difference in the lives of our Southern California neighbors. This part of the state is so much more than a place: it’s where we’ve grown up, started families, shared our stories, and lived our dreams. It’s only natural for us to feel so inspired by the many kind folks we’ve met here while striving to show up for them however we can.

When the L.A. fires began in January 2025, focusing on our community became even more of a highlight. We dedicated any time we could to donating and raising awareness in an effort to alleviate the devastating effects of this event. This experience has been a living testament to not only nature’s power, but also the power within us all to come together, connect, and grow from our shared sorrows together.

It’s within our ethos at Growing Roots to look for every opportunity to give back and support our local Southern California community. Whether we accomplish this through planted initiatives or simply lending a helping hand, there are several ways we like to show how much we care.

Charity Donations – Giving Back to Our community

One of the ways Growing Roots loves to consistently help our community is by supporting local charities. For every new client, we donate $100 on their behalf to a local charity of their choice. Offering a list of local California non-profits, we see this as our way of helping our community thrive and encouraging our clients to do so as well.

Some of the organizations we work with include:

  • The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (SPCALA)
  • The Humane Society of Ventura County
  • Gems Uncovered, an organization assisting victims of human trafficking
  • DSF WERKS, an organization supporting emancipated foster, and underserved youths with workplace education, skills training, and mentorship
  • Precious Lamb Preschool, an organization providing free, full-day education for unhoused children
  • The Ventura County Rescue Mission, an organization aiding unhoused individuals
  • TreePeople, a Southern California organization and movement that plants trees and inspires local communities

Local Outreach

As longstanding members of Long Beach, we’ve made it our mission to not only spread plant love but also look for ways Growing Roots can compassionately do so. One of our favorite forms of local outreach is through pot-a-plant events, where we educate community members on how to properly nurture plants and share how easy it can be to connect with nature. We’ve sponsored engagements like this at local community events, as well as fundraised for environmental initiatives. Growing Roots is also a proud business sponsor to some of the local schools.

It doesn’t stop there. As an avid supporter of the Green Plants for Green Buildings association, our founder Jennifer Perez teaches a CEU course on plant benefits to help educate the A&D community on how to bring more greenery and the benefits of biophilic design into their work. Knowing how influential a little green can be in brightening one’s surroundings, she loves nothing more than sharing this knowledge with others.

Sustainability Initiatives

Sustainability is a major interest for the Growing Roots team, and it’s not just because we work with plants all day. We believe it takes all of us to build a healthier planet, and we start with our day-to-day responsibilities.

To encourage the maintenance of sustainable ecosystems indoors and out, we implement carbon-reducing practices in all aspects of our business, cut waste wherever possible, and are careful not to use harmful products. We’re also a proud Green Earth, Green Plants Certified business who works incredibly hard to champion environmentally friendly practices in our workplace.

Who is Growing Roots?

If you’re not yet familiar, Growing Roots is our indoor plant care company dedicated to creating beautiful and healthy lived environments. As plant care professionals servicing many parts of Southern California, we’ve spent over 20 years providing high-quality plants, designs, and installations to a variety of residential and commercial clients.

We got our start back in 2002 when our founder Jennifer Perez wanted to “spread more plant love.” Developing a deeply rooted affinity for the natural world in her early years from her grandparents, she realized just how disconnected others were while living in modern urban environments. Inspired by this conviction and motivated by a drive to help others realize it for themselves, she opened the first Growing Roots office in Long Beach, California.

Jennifer Perez is deeply invested in her Long Beach community. With her kids in local schools, she understands the importance of creating thriving spaces for families and businesses alike. For Jenn, Growing Roots isn’t just about plants—it’s about connection. Whether she’s designing lush interiors, partnering with local businesses and charities, or sharing her love of greenery, her mission is to give back to the city she loves and help keep Southern California thriving, one plant at a time.

Since our start, our incredible team has helped an abundance of local homes and businesses immerse their spaces with a variety of greenery, whether in terms of indoor plants and outdoor container gardens.

Today, Growing Roots maintains our commitment to excellent service by remaining a company who:

  • Hires Passionate People — We only choose to work with individuals who enjoy indoor plants as much as our founder does. As part of a careful selection process, Growing Roots hires individuals who want to nurture lived environments with collaboration, creativity, and a deep sense of care. Once on board, we ensure every one of our team members understands the ins and outs of our plant design and plant maintenance processes.
  • Creates Proper Processes — Because of how much we care for our plants and your well-being, we dedicate our time to developing a streamlined workflow. Everyone at Growing Roots will show up for you however we can, from initial evaluations of your space to routine check-ins for your eventual installations. We work only with the best nurseries and growers, select only the highest quality tropical foliage and botanicals, and deliver only our best service—because it’s what you deserve.
  • Loves What We Do — Spending our day to day working with plants is more than a passion: it’s Growing Root’s greatest expression of biophilia, or love of life. By surrounding ourselves with living plants and making it our business to care for them, we have the opportunity to extend that love to our surrounding community.
